Day 6 – Elephant Sanctuary

Pictures from the walk to the elephant sanctuary – it’s up in the mountains and the road getting there was an adventure! Twisty, narrow, and with super steep drop offs on each side. I’m so glad I wasn’t driving…

Once we got to the sanctuary, we chopped up sugarcane as a treat for the elephants and made supplement balls for them too. There are only 4 elephants at the sanctuary so that they all have enough space to have as natural a life as possible. Any more, and it’d be too crowded. The students loaded the sugarcane into long pipes with holes so the elephants could snack at will 😊

ELEPHANTS!! ❤️🐘

It was so incredibly cool to be this close. It’s a no touch sanctuary, again to allow the elephants to have as natural a life as possible. They are rescues so they’ve worked around humans most of their lives but they’ve been retired 😊 With that said, we were within 15 feet of the elephants while they were snacking on the sugarcane!!

We then walked to one of the locations where they grow the sugarcane, and the students planted some for the future. In the way, we saw some very pretty roosters. Then dinner, which ended with some of the prettiest mango sticky rice I’ve seen in this trip!!

Tomorrow, the students are going back to the sanctuary. I think we’re also supposed to go to a silk factory – I’ll report back on that.
